AN EXTRAORDINARY
SHOWCASE AND SYMPOSIUM IN A CARNIVAL-LIKE SETTING
40 students. 7 teachers. 1 school year. Remarkable impact.
This interdisciplinary research course is a unique learning experience for our students to conduct an independent research project and initiate positive change in our community. Students choose their research topic and design their projects using Stanford Design School’s Empathy Design Framework. These projects span across STEM, humanities, arts, and athletics. Students consider multiple perspectives through user empathy interviews while researching nuanced topics and are guided by a mentor. This is done through empathy interviews with peers and community members.
As a large comprehensive high school, Monta Vista is excited to be able to offer this experience of the Interdisciplinary Research and Research Design course to our students. It is a nontraditional learning environment that looks to empower our students by valuing the student voice and giving student choice to authentically allow for student ownership of their learning. Student research topics include mental health and student wellness, teen health and nutrition, inequities, STEM, inclusive student body, and the impacts of social media.
Come and see research projects from the entire class on how they are positively changing our community at the upcoming Monta Vista Steam Showcase on May 13, 2022 from 4-7pm in our Rally Court. This important event will also include hearing from a panel of experts, performances from our Drama and Art students, music, food trucks, and more.
